Trentham Station bridge to remain closed until further notice
The Trentham Station overbridge will remain closed until further notice due to an accident involving the span structure of the bridge while it was being repaired to make it safer.
Paul Swain, Greater Wellington Regional Council’s public transport portfolio leader, says the bridge was due to reopen around now after being closed for three months for extensive repairs. “However, at the final hurdle, when the span structure was at the subcontractor’s for painting, a lifting strap gave way, the span fell to the ground and has likely been irreparably damaged.
“This is extremely unfortunate and we apologise to customers for the inconvenience. I know a number of people have been waiting for the re-opening of the bridge and I understand their frustration.
“As a result of this incident, we’ll be investigating all options providing access to the station from the north and we will be discussing those options with the residents of Summerset Village. However, whichever option we decide on, there’ll be no direct access from the northern end of the station for several more months at least.”
People coming to Trentham Station from Ararino Street or Racecourse Road need to continue to use the pedestrian rail crossing at the southern end of the station.
